Nauthúsagil: Means the canyon of the cattle houses. It is narrow and long and it is possible to walk to the bottom but the river must be crossed a few times. It is well worth it though since the canyon is extremely beautiful. In the bottom of the canyon is a waterfall but what is most interesting is the magnitude of trees that line the canyon edges. Nauthúsagil is most famous for a rowan (mountain ash) that once stood in the canyon opening. It was one of the biggest trees in Iceland and considered holy and all those who tried to damage it received bad luck. This tree was believed to have flourished so well due to a sheep pen that lay close to the trees roots and gave it nourishment. When the tree broke in 1937 its trunk was analysed and found to be at least 90 years old. This old tree is long gone, but a new one risen from the roots.
